Youth Volunteers come on board in time for Great Outdoor Spectacular and Summer Holiday Programme!
Vodafone Foundation World of Difference winner, Wendy Johnstone, nears the end of her funded placement at local charity and social enterprise, Wiston Lodge.
It has been a busy 3 months. Achievements with Volunteering Development to date…
- 30 volunteers and staff interviewed regarding refinement of the volunteering set up at the residential outdoor centre.
- Report in pipeline which captures current good practice and makes recommendations for future development.
- Online blog has showcased the work of many Wiston Lodge volunteers, both past and present.
- 15 young adults trained last weekend. Mostly from rural South Lanarkshire, with 4 coming from further afield. Given an insight into the holiday programme planning and delivery, health and safety guidelines, assessment and management of risk and child protection. Although many of the young adults didn’t know one another before the day, they all worked well as a team, engaged fully with the day and had fun learning the ropes…literally! We hope that they will be a real asset to the charity over the coming months!
Wendy Johnstone, Volunteering Development Worker, said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome our new cohort of youth volunteers to Wiston Lodge at the weekend. These are difficult economic times and we all hear regularly about how challenging it is for young adults to gain employment, university and college places. We at Wiston Lodge are committed to offering young people unique opportunities to develop skills, confidence and experiences that will serve them well as they make the transitions from school to college, work and beyond.”
The new youth volunteers will assist the instructors with the safe delivery of the Summer Holiday Programme, which runs for 4 weeks in the summer (weekdays, weeks beginning Monday 1st, 8th, 22nd and 26th July).
Many of the new youth volunteers will start their Wiston Lodge’s volunteering journey, helping out with our annual fundraising open day, ‘The Great Outdoor Spectacular’, which takes place on Saturday 22nd June. This is one of the busiest days in the Wiston Lodge calendar so should give our new recruits plenty of action!
In conclusion, Wendy said: “I am extremely grateful to the Vodafone Foundation’s World of Difference Programme for the chance to work at my favourite charity, Wiston Lodge. It has enabled me to help progress aspects of our volunteering work, which we don’t ordinarily have the time or the resources to address. I have just less than 5 weeks of my placement left but I intend to make the most of it! Watch this space!”
