Green Ethos
One of Wiston Lodge's major attractions is our outdoor space. Our 52-acre estate consists of a wide variety of woodlands, with a large campsite and a productive vegetable garden.
Outdoor Space
The scale of our estate allows us to offer a wide range of environments. Some of these are described below:

Trees and sunlight in the Policy woods
- Policy woodlands. These woodlands, surrounding the main house, consist of interesting and exotic trees and plantings. This creates a beautiful area in the immediate surroundings of the main house.
- Regenerating woodland. This area is undergoing natural regeneration, with pioneer species and some native broadleaf planting. An ideal place to demonstrate the natural environment, possibly as part of the John Muir Award.
- Plantation woodland. We have three plantations: An area of Sitka Spruce which provides firewood and building material, a larch plantation approaching maturity, and a mixed plantation of young larch and ash trees.
- Vegetable garden. Our organic vegetable and herb garden provides food for our guests and a great environment to learn about food growing.
Land Management
We take the management of our land very seriously. With so many trees, safety is our highest priority – dealing with dead, damaged or windblown trees is a priority to ensure that our woodlands are safe.
The restoration and development of paths is also a high priority.
Caring for our Environment

Scottish Natural Heritage.
We are committed to supporting our environment at Wiston. We do so by moving towards sustainable development and education. It is possible for visiting groups to follow programmes leading to John Muir Awards and also for groups and individuals to help in the garden or on the estate.
The 52 acre estate belonging to Wiston Lodge is an oasis for wildlife and provides a habitat for a wide range of plants, birds and animals.
Most of the kitchen waste is composted in the garden. We recycle bottles, cans and paper, and are replacing light bulbs with long-life bulbs.
Our Long Term Goals Include:
- increased production of vegetable from our organic garden and the provision of gardening training programmes for young people.
- conservation and development of buildings on the estate aiming for energy efficiency and reduction of resource usage
- replanting the woodlands with native species
- providing a resource for training the next generation of environmentally-conscious people
